Packing and Unpacking: Distance Education and the Social Model of Disability

I am finally packed.
Gah – I am so terrible at packing…
It taxes my executive function because… anticipating… and predicting… and sorting… and organizing… and planning… and DECISIONS!!

So now that this is done, I will tell you about my next adventure because there are some potentially amazing opportunities on a global level and I am excited by the possibilities.

The Commonwealth of Learning, an organization created by Commonwealth nations to support an international educational initiative for the development and sharing of Distributed Learning (distance ed/open learning) resources and technologies, has invited me to present at their conference in Belize: Innovative Schooling: Transforming Pedagogy, Increasing Access, to Ensure Learning.

And I am leaving today…

Distance education has been growing tremendously in the United States and other parts of the world. Technology, World Wide Web has made distance learning easier and affordable. Distance learning has generated more interest in schools and colleges and universities (Jones & Wolf, 2010).Nursing students have been very active in distance education to balance their life  and work and education. Distance education or online education can be synchronized or synchronized. According to a report tracking online learning over the past ten years by the Babson Survey Research Group, students registered in at least one online class is at an all-time high of 32% in 2013 and growth continues and it will take a long time to plateau. Expensive Skyping

If I haven’t mentioned before, I’m a student at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA)… taking many of my Mechatronics Engineering classes from North Carolina State University (NCSU).

In other words, I’m a distance education (DE) student.

It’s a fantastic program… I really do enjoy it…

But let me tell you… that’s an expensive Skype call.

It’s not exactly Skype… the school uses another program (the name has left my mind for the moment)… but it’s the same concept.

The schools call each other and, once connected, the professor lectures us through a video conference.

There is even about as many technical problems as I have had with Skype calls!

In reality, there is a lot more that goes into the programs than just a Skype-ish call.

There’s the help of TA’s at UNCA, NCSU, and other schools that participate in that particular class…

There’s the homework/exams… some online……

Women and distance education

The trend that I am noticing in the workforce and among students is more adult females going back to school in United States and adult minority female learners are increasing. In nursing also, many older adult females who had other jobs are returning to nursing as their second career.Many barriers and chains are broken by women to pursue higher education.According to national center of education statistics, females are expected to account for the majority of college students, about 11.5 million females will attend in fall 2015, compared with 8.7 million males (Derpartment of of education, 2015).

Social media also offers connecting outside the four walls of colleges and women can stay connected and they can create a professional voice and enhance their ability to attend schools online even if they are geographically disconnected (Schmitt, Sims-Giddens, & Booth, 2012).
